Tooth Touch ups Does anything bother you about the appearance of your child's teeth? If stained or broken teeth are lowering your child's self esteem, something can and often should be done. Does your child smile without showing his or her teeth? How about covering their mouth before laughing, or talking with their face lowered so you can't see the mouth? Cosmetic dental procedures are available for children. Often, these procedures are neither difficult for the child to sit through, nor are they expensive - particularly in light of the psychological changes they invoke. Chipped permanent teeth are easily fixed. Many years ago the tooth had to be crowned (capped), an expensive multivisit procedure. Now bonding is used to fill in the missing piece with tooth colored material. Often the match is so good that you can't tell the tooth was chipped in the first place. This same procedure is also used to fill in the gap between front teeth of older children and adults. Discoloration from various sources is not as common as it once was, but it still occurs. These stains are sometimes difficult to bleach out. A good solution is to have a thin veneer bonded over the surface of the tooth - something like the acrylic fingernails.
Moderate stains and blemishes in the outer layer of the enamel may be removed by
a process known as micro abrasion. A chemical/physical process. This safe and
simple procedure only works for minimal stains and blemishes in the outer layer
of the enamel surface. There are additional procedures which can be used for
deeper stains of blemishes. |
