Bleaching your teeth

The color of our teeth is a function of the density and thickness of the enamel (outer layer) and dentin (inner layer). Combine this with any genetic pre-dispositions, and dietary patterns, and our teeth are a palate of white, yellow, brown and gray (with some red and blue thrown in for good measure).

The success (and failure) of bleaching is also influenced by our preconceived notion of what we expect the bleaching process to accomplish, the more likely you are to be less satisfied with the procedure.

This is not to say that the bleaching procedure is unsuccessful. More often than not, the results are terrific. There are several "levels" of treatment. For those wishing an inexpensive method there is the over-the-counter product. For those not wanting to be "bothered" with day-to-day treatment, there is the in-office, "professional" treatment. And for those wishing the most control on the level of whiteness, you can combine the in-office treatment with some day-to-day treatment.

Each level of treatment will provide results. It is important that each of us understands that the results are variable. What works for one inidividual may not work quite as well for another. What happens quickly for some may require more treatment for others. Unfortunately, there is no way to predict on an individual basis what the outcome will be.
