Fluoride in our water As you are probably aware, fluoride is naturally found in the water that we drink. The amount will vary from glass to glass based on the community you live in, and the type of water filtration process (or lack thereof) in your home. In addition, the city of Los Angeles will be adding fluoride to it's water supply in the near future. There is no question that fluoride is good for our teeth - particularly taken systemically in small quantities during the developmental years (to age eight). We have all heard, however, that too much fluoride can be detrimental to the esthetics of our teeth. So, how much fluoride should your children be consuming on a daily basis, and how much fluoride are they consuming in the water that they drink? The first question is easy to answer. As I prefer to err on the conservative side. I recommend that the maximum systematic fluoride intake be no more than 0.25mg up to the age of 3. Thereafter the maximum dosage should be no more than 0.50mg. The answer to the second question requires a little work. A sample of your water needs to be tested. I prefer the procedure with Omni Products.
