Your Mouth & Cardiovascular Disease

CVD is the number one cause of death in America.  Two of the risk factors are related to your dental health and can easily be eliminated or controlled.  This is not new news – but it certainly warrants repeating.
Gum disease is caused by the accumulation of bacteria around the roots of your teeth.  Your body, in defense of this bacterial invasion, creates an inflammatory response.  This added stress to your body can cause damage to blood vessels which in turn can lead to a stroke or heart attack.
What to do ?  Floss – brush – water pik – and get your teeth cleaned regularly.  If your gums are puffy, if they bleed when you brush or floss, if you have bad breath, please get yourself checked !
Snoring can be an indication that your airway is obstructed while you’re sleeping.  If you wake frequently at night – if you’re tired during the day – if you get silent while sleeping then suddenly “snort” awake; these can be symptoms of Sleep Apnea.  When your breathing is obstructed, the amount of oxygen feeding your body decreases.  The sudden surge of air into your system can cause your blood pressure to jump.  Repetitive episodes, night after night, can damage your blood vessels and lead to a stroke or heart attack.
What to do ?  See your dental professional.  Get an airway evaluation and if indicated, a sleep study.  By the way, women with neck diameters of 16 inches or greater, and men 17 inches or greater have a higher incidence of Sleep Apnea.
